Monte Vista High School is a public, comprehensive school that serves students in grades nine through twelve. Opened in 1961, Monte Vista is the seventh of eleven (actually nine schools since two have become charter schools) high schools built in the Grossmont Union High School District and is located approximately fifteen miles east of downtown San Diego in the unincorporated city of Spring Valley, California.  

Monte Vista High School has been ranked among the top 1600 schools in the nation by Newsweek and U.S. News & World Reports in recent years due in part to its excellent record of AP testing and its steadily increasing Annual Performance Index (API) scores. In 2015, Monte Vista was 1 of 22 schools in San Diego County to be recognized as a Gold Ribbon School by the State of California. Other recent accomplishments that Monte Vista High School has achieved include the following:
  • Net gain of 108 points in API over the last 5 years, highest gain in the district during that time
  • Highest API score in school's history at 786
  • Highest Similar Schools Ranking in the district at 9 out of 10 
  • CAHSEE pass rate for ELA is 87% and 90% for Math
  • #2 in the Grossmont District for Advanced Placement exams proctored
  • Over 40% of graduating seniors take at least 1 AP class while at Monte Vista
  • National AVID Demonstration School, 16 years running
  • Multiple Gates Millennium Scholarship winners
  • 1 of 3 schools in the district with a "Linked Learning Pathway", Automotive Technology & Video Game Design and Programming
  • 95% of classrooms on campus newly modernized within the last 3 years
  • Brand new Science, Library, Weight Room, Mechanics Bay and Guidance offices
