The high school years are a critical developmental period in children's lives. A strong school can edify and enlighten; a bad one can stifle growth. Thus, as a parent, you need to be informed when choosing schools. Academics, extracurricular activities, school culture--all are criteria you must consider when asking yourself a crucial question: Where should I send my child for high school?
The simple answer--Monte Vista.
We pride ourselves on measurable results. We are very proud of the gains we have made recently and we look forward to continued gains. We have the highest Similar Schools Rank in the district at 9 out of 10. In comparison, a neighboring charter school (Steele Canyon) ranks 2 out of 10.
Our high academic standards and tireless pursuit of excellence are best reflected by our Academic Performance Index (API) growth. Our API has been on the rise since 2008 and is currently at a record high of 786. API score is calculated primarily using the results of the California Standards Test (CST) and the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). Our students have made consistent gains in all portions of the CST, and last year approximately 90% of Monte Vista’s tenth-grade students passed both the English and Math portions of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) on their first attempt.
Monte Vista High School prepares students to succeed in their careers and in college. We teach students to be critical thinkers, curious and collaborative learners, conscientious planners, and comprehensive researchers and writers.
We offer a strong academic program highlighted by 11 Honors and 18 Advanced Placement classes. If Advanced Placement exams were proctored today, Monte Vista would give 852 tests, one of the highest participation rates in the district. Forty percent of our students are currently completing the UC A-G requirements, higher than the district average. Over 68% of our graduates enroll in two- and four-year colleges and universities, including (in the past few years alone) schools like The Naval Academy at Annapolis, Pepperdine University, UC Berkeley, The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford.
Success for all students is a part of Monte Vista’s mission. In addressing the needs of every student, Monte Vista offers numerous career technical pathways, including Automotive Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Cosmetology and our newest pathway, Video Game Design & Programming. Our visual and performing arts program features advanced dance, drama, choir, ensemble, performance band and guitar.
We offer a variety of support programs to aid struggling students and give extra help to those who are already determined to succeed. Monte Vista is a National AVID Demonstration School (Advancement via Individual Determination) and we provide English and math support classes as well as a before and after-school Homework Center. Monte Vista students are also supported by UCSD Trio Talent Search and Upward Bound Math/Science.
Monte Vista also boasts a highly competitive CIF Athletic Program. Our wrestling, basketball, volleyball, soccer, football, cross-country, tennis, water polo and track programs have all won league championships or been in the CIF Finals in the last three years.
Dedicated instructors, a caring guidance staff, exceptional leadership, and a positive campus environment make Monte Vista High School one of the best secondary schools in San Diego County. Parents can be assured that Monte Vista students will be challenged by skilled and caring teachers and nurtured by a quality academic program. The staff and faculty at Monte Vista are excited to work with you and to get to know your student!
