It gives us great sadness to announce the passing of Richard Carlson, a longtime Monarch of almost 20 years.  Richard was diagnosed with cancer this past April, and he passed away Wednesday, July 10th.  Richard was Monte Vista's ASB Director for 10 years and also taught Government and Economics.  Prior to coming to Monte Vista, Richard taught in San Jose for 11 years.  Richard coached swim at Granite Hills and was also the owner of Leatherby's Ice Cream Shop.  Richard was a caring and generous man who loved his students and went out of his way to help them.  He was loved by all who knew him.  Richard was famous for telling the same few jokes over and over again to different classes.  Richard is survived by his wife Joan and his two daughters, Heather and Saundra (who is married to Monte Vista Social Science teacher Mike Johnson).

A memorial service for Richard will be held next Tuesday, July 16th at 2:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church of El Cajon at 500 Farragut Circle.  Following the service, there will be a reception in the church hall.  In Lieu of flowers, the family has asked for donations to be made to Monte Vista High School's Sunshine Fund which helps  students in need purchase basic necessities and school items.  Richard started this fund years ago when he was at Monte Vista for this very purpose.
