Rosalind, daughter of the banished Duke, falls in love with Orlando the disinherited son of one of the Duke’s friends. When she is banished by her uncle, the usurping Duke Frederick, Rosalind and her cousin, Celia, flee the court with the jester, Touchstone, and Rosalind disguises herself as a man named Ganymede. They go to the Forest of Arden (where the banished Duke and his followers live in exile) and meet a host of characters who inhabit the forest. Themes about life and love, including aging, the natural world, and death are included in the play. By play’s end, love seems to conquer all as Ganymede once again becomes Rosalind and marries Orlando (as do 3 other couples) and is reunited with her father.
